YRF’s Spy Universe Faces Major Setback with War 2
In just one week, the once-promising YRF Spy Universe has hit a major roadblock. After delivering five successful films, the franchise has faced its first big failure since 2012. Following the successes of Pathaan and Tiger 3 earlier this year, expectations were high for Aditya Chopra’s War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and NTR Jr.
Despite a hefty budget of ₹450 crores for production, it seems the gamble didn’t pay off. Industry insiders have reported that Yash Raj Films (YRF) is set to incur substantial losses from War 2. While they have recouped around ₹150 crores through digital, satellite, and music rights, the best-case theatrical earnings are projected at just ₹140 crores worldwide. This puts YRF on track to lose approximately ₹60 to ₹70 crores.
This failure is already being labeled as one of YRF’s biggest disappointments, alongside the notorious Thugs of Hindostan. Reports indicate that box office numbers are dropping sharply, potentially jeopardizing the entire franchise’s future. It’s a challenging time for YRF as War 2 impacts their plans for future spy films.
Additionally, the film’s Telugu distributor, Naga Vamsi, faces significant losses, expecting to lose about 65% of his ₹90 crore investment, with local earnings likely falling under ₹40 crores.
With past hits like Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, War, Pathaan, and Tiger 3, this downturn marks a notable moment in the YRF Spy Universe’s history.
