Shoaib Bashir Stays Focused Amidst Nathan Lyon’s Remarks
England’s young spinner, Shoaib Bashir, is taking comments from Australian bowler Nathan Lyon in stride. Following a recent home series against India, Lyon described Bashir’s performance as average and suggested that Jack Leach might be England’s top spin choice as both teams prepare for the upcoming Ashes series in Australia.
After sustaining a finger injury in the third Test, Bashir is currently on the mend but took the opportunity to respond to Lyon’s statements.
“I understand that everyone has their views, and that’s perfectly fine. I focus on what I believe and the support from those around me rather than outside opinions,” he said.
The 21-year-old spinner revealed that he has always admired Lyon and is eager to learn from him. “I really like how he bowls, especially his overspin. It’s an impressive skill. I’ve looked at him for quite some time and learned that while height helps with bounce, there’s more to it,” Bashir shared.
He emphasized his desire to improve his game. “My goal is to refine my skills. I’m tall and aim to put a lot of spin on the ball, which allows for different variations. I’m still young and learning every day. I enjoy discussing the game and gaining knowledge,” Bashir added.
If he fully recovers, Bashir hopes to make his Test debut in Australia, where he aims to play an important role in England’s quest to regain the Ashes. He mentioned his determination to rise to the challenge: “I won’t shy away from the competition. If tensions rise, I’ll be ready, but I prefer to keep things relaxed. Winning the series would be special and a fantastic achievement for us right now. We’re excited about what lies ahead.”
