Matteo Berrettini Withdraws from 2025 US Open Due to Injury
Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini has officially announced that he will not be participating in the 2025 US Open because of ongoing injury issues. The 29-year-old, who made it to the Wimbledon final in 2021, has faced fitness challenges throughout the year. He hasn’t played since his early exit in June at Wimbledon, where he lost to Kamil Majchrzak, and he also missed the Toronto and Cincinnati tournaments leading up to the US Open.
In another change ahead of the tournament, American player Brandon Holt, who was originally granted a wild card for the main draw, will be substituted by Eliot Spizzirri. Spizzirri, a talented player from the University of Texas, will take Holt’s spot.
Adding to the list of withdrawals, Bulgarian player Grigor Dimitrov is also out of the tournament due to a pectoral injury. Dimitrov had an impressive run of 58 consecutive appearances in major tournaments before this setback, which happened during his match against Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon.
Paula Badosa Shares Heartfelt Thoughts
Spanish tennis star Paula Badosa has also withdrawn, citing a chronic lower back injury that has kept her off the court since her early exit at Wimbledon. She expressed her feelings in a touching message, stating, “I wasn’t built by easy days. I was shaped by the moments that broke me, the choices that didn’t go as planned, and the times I fell short of who I wanted to be. My setbacks weren’t signs of weakness; they were necessary chapters in a story that’s still being written.”
She added, “Failure taught me what success never could. It humbled me and made me reflect on who I am. While I once feared my mistakes, I’m now grateful for them as they’ve become great teachers.”
The 2025 US Open is set to take place from August 24 to September 7 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. Despite the withdrawals, the tournament is still expected to feature top players like World No. 1 Jannik Sinner, World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic, promising thrilling matches as the tennis season wraps up.
