Shai Hope Shines with 18th ODI Century Against Pakistan

Shai Hope recently celebrated a significant milestone by scoring his 18th One Day International (ODI) century, moving ahead of cricket legend Desmond Haynes and closing in on Brian Lara, who sits at 19 centuries. On August 12, during a thrilling match at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, Hope showcased his skill with an impressive unbeaten 120 runs off just 94 balls. His innings included 10 fours and 5 sixes, helping the West Indies finish with a solid total of 294 runs for 6 wickets after being invited to bat first.

West Indies vs Pakistan, 3rd ODI Highlights

Hope’s remarkable consistency and ability to handle pressure have solidified his position as one of the top batsmen in West Indies cricket. Since making his debut in 2019, he has played 142 matches and is well-positioned to aim for Lara’s record and potentially even Chris Gayle’s remarkable tally of 25 ODI centuries.

Most ODI Centuries for West Indies

  • Chris Gayle: 25 centuries in 298 matches
  • Brian Lara: 19 centuries in 295 matches
  • Shai Hope: 18 centuries in 142 matches
  • Desmond Haynes: 17 centuries in 238 matches
  • Shivnarine Chanderpaul: 11 centuries in 268 matches
  • Gordon Greenidge: 11 centuries in 128 matches
  • Vivian Richards: 11 centuries in 187 matches

Hope Drives West Indies Forward

The West Indies’ innings began steadily, scoring 36 runs for one wicket during the early powerplay. Hope played a crucial role, reaching his half-century in 54 balls and steering the team through critical moments.

A standout moment came from his partnership with Justin Greaves. With the West Indies struggling at 184 for 6, the pair formed a spectacular unbeaten partnership of 110 runs for the seventh wicket in just 49 balls. This partnership ranks as the second-highest seventh-wicket stand in West Indies ODI history. During their partnership, Hope completed his century in 83 balls, remaining not out at the end. Greaves also played an essential role, scoring 43 runs off just 24 balls and supporting Hope beautifully with his aggressive play.

In conclusion, Hope’s achievement not only strengthens his standing in West Indies cricket but also promises an exciting future as he continues to chase down the legends of the game.
