A group of Western nations, including the U.S. and the U.K., issued a joint statement on Thursday condemning Iran for its attempts to “kill, kidnap, and harass” foreign nationals. This statement highlighted concerns that Iranian intelligence agents are targeting dissidents, Jewish individuals, journalists, and former government officials in various countries across Europe and North America, violating these nations’ sovereignty.
In the statement, which was also supported by Canada, Germany, and France, officials emphasized their unity against these Iranian actions. They described the attacks as unacceptable and called on Iranian authorities to halt such illegal activities immediately.
Beyond the initial condemnation, this announcement serves as a warning to citizens in Europe and North America regarding Tehran’s hostile actions. Geopolitical tensions have been rising recently, especially following U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
Reports have indicated that Iran has become increasingly involved in covert operations aimed at foreign individuals. This includes an alleged plot to assassinate former President Donald Trump during the 2024 election, as well as numerous attacks against people in the U.S. and Europe. The U.K. has also recorded over 20 incidents linked to Iran involving the potential killing or kidnapping of British citizens since 2022, primarily targeting Iranian dissidents.
In light of these events, the Iranian government has consistently denied any involvement in these plots. However, concerns remain, especially among journalists and activists who have faced threats of violence, particularly following widespread protests in Iran in 2022 after the death of Mahsa Amini, who was detained for allegedly not wearing her hijab properly.
