Mark Zuckerberg’s Quiet AI Venture at Meta: A Mystery to Investors and Insiders Alike

Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly working on a secretive new unit focused on advanced AI research within Meta. This initiative is intriguing because it’s been kept largely hidden from investors and even many insiders. As Meta updates its AI strategy, Zuckerberg is offering significant sign-on bonuses to attract top talent from companies like OpenAI, Apple, and Google.

The Financial Times shared insights from sources close to Zuckerberg, revealing that the CEO wants to foster an environment free from bureaucracy to enhance AI development, all funded by Meta’s resources. This secretive unit is said to operate from a distinct area within Meta’s Menlo Park headquarters, away from the company’s existing AI projects.

Zuckerberg has been personally welcoming new team members who have recently joined. This lab is believed to be guided by Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI, and Nat Friedman, who previously led GitHub. However, the lack of transparency surrounding the lab’s goals and budget has caused concern among investors and insiders alike, especially as Meta is poised to report its slowest profit growth in two years.

A close source mentioned that even the team working on the project hasn’t been given a clear strategy, highlighting the isolated nature of the initiative. In June, Zuckerberg introduced a new group called Meta Superintelligence Labs, consisting of leading AI researchers and engineers. Recently, it was announced that Shengjia Zhao, a co-creator of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, would be the chief scientist for this new lab.

This isn’t the first time Zuckerberg has made ambitious moves in technology. At the height of the 2022 digital asset boom, he rebranded the company to “Meta,” showing his commitment to building a virtual “metaverse,” despite the substantial costs involved.
