The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health

Many people spend a lot of time scrolling through social media every day. But how does this activity really affect our mental health?

According to Dr. Susan Albers from the Cleveland Clinic, there are both positive and negative aspects to using social media. She explains that the way we use these platforms is important. When used to keep in touch with friends and family, social media can help reduce feelings of loneliness. However, relying on it instead of real-life connections can lead to feelings of isolation.

Dr. Albers highlights that having a sense of belonging is a basic human need. For those feeling disconnected, social media can bridge that gap by connecting them with like-minded individuals. This can be especially beneficial for people who are isolated geographically, have disabilities, or struggle with social anxiety.

On the flip side, social media can also lead to negative feelings. People often compare themselves to others, which can be troubling since many posts are heavily edited or curated. This can create unrealistic expectations and hurt self-esteem over time.

Dr. Albers advises that it’s best to use social media in moderation. Research indicates that spending more than two hours a day online can increase the risk of anxiety and depression. When online interactions become competitive or focused on comparison, it can significantly impact mental health.

If you’re finding that social media makes you feel down, a break might be a good idea. Dr. Albers suggests stepping away from screens to enjoy some fresh air and sunlight. Taking this time can help you feel more positive and reconnect with the things that bring you joy.
