KLM Launches New Route to San Diego for Summer 2025
KLM has announced an exciting addition to its flight network: a new route to San Diego, introduced in May 2025. This new connection highlights the importance of American markets for airlines, as cities like San Diego offer significant opportunities for both business and leisure travelers.
Smooth Check-in and Cozy Lounge
Traveling with just a carry-on bag made the online check-in process easy, thanks to KLM’s user-friendly website. Passengers can enjoy the Delta Sky Club at San Diego Airport, which features a buffet with both hot and cold options, as well as a bar. I particularly enjoyed the comfortable terrace seating that overlooks the terminal. A fun touch was a popcorn machine, a delightful snack option during my visit.
Efficient Boarding Process
There was no announcement for boarding, but it was a quick walk to the gate. Upon scanning my boarding pass, I boarded the flight seamlessly. The boarding was remarkably smooth, even for a new route.
Onboard, two cheerful flight attendants guided me to my seat on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Business class seating was arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration, allowing everyone easy access to the aisle. Although KLM’s new premium seats feature sliding doors for privacy, my seat was quite comfy and fully reclined at the push of a button. The large touchscreen entertainment system offered plenty of options for passengers.
In-flight Comfort and Amenities
While I noticed that amenity kits were not distributed on this flight—a slight oversight—passengers would typically receive them on long-haul flights. One of the standout features of KLM is their personalized menus, specifically designed for each route, which adds a nice touch to the dining experience.
The lead flight attendant, Will, warmly welcomed everyone aboard and offered a variety of welcome drinks, including sparkling wine and Heineken. He was particularly attentive, making sure that all passengers felt appreciated, especially those with loyalty status.
Delicious Dining Experience
In-flight service began right away with warm towels and an aperitif. I ordered some drinks from the bar, accompanied by mixed nuts. The appetizer included a choice of soup or a traditional starter; I opted for the flavorful red curry soup, paired with a fresh side salad.
KLM’s dining experience is noteworthy, boasting a wine list that includes brief descriptions of each selection. For the main course, I was pleasantly surprised by a “tasting of delicacies,” featuring small portions of Indonesian beef rendang, a quesadilla, and spicy chicken, which allowed me to sample various flavors.
Every course came served on beautiful blue and white china, and the staff ensured drinks were topped up throughout the meal. I chose a delightful cheese course and was treated to a chocolate surprise before settling down for sleep.
Morning Service Before Landing
About two hours before our arrival in Amsterdam, the cabin lights came on, signaling breakfast service. KLM offers hot breakfast meals and makes sure that coffee or tea is served on a separate tray, complete with a cookie—a thoughtful touch.
Before landing, passengers received collectible Delft houses, each representing a significant landmark from the Netherlands. This unique gift is a cherished tradition, allowing passengers to connect with the airline and learn more about its culture.
Friendly Service and Smooth Arrival
Throughout the flight, the crew was exceptionally friendly and attentive, making everyone feel welcome. We touched down early, and after saying goodbye to the crew, I was ready for my onward journey.
Final Thoughts
KLM remains a preferred airline for travel to Europe, offering travelers the chance to earn or redeem miles with their alliance partners. The warm and engaging crew, along with the special collectible Delft houses, adds to the overall charm of flying with KLM.
