Mangaluru: Governor Urges Indian Red Cross to Embrace Technology for Better Service

Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot emphasized the importance of technology in enhancing the humanitarian services of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS). He made this statement during the opening of the new centenary building for the IRCS Dakshina Kannada (DK) unit at the Old DC office premises on Saturday.

The Governor encouraged IRCS to innovate beyond traditional methods and called for more young volunteers to engage in community service through the Youth Red Cross and Junior Red Cross units. He expressed hope that the new building would become a center for public welfare efforts.

“The IRCS stands as a symbol of humanity and dedicated service. For many years, it has provided crucial support during health crises,” he said. He highlighted that the IRCS’s main focus is on humanity, working tirelessly for societal well-being and joy.

Given the challenges of urbanization and health issues, the Governor noted the growing demand for IRCS services. “The organization is committed to reaching out to all communities, offering medical assistance, emergency help, and promoting blood donation. It operates across 190 countries,” he added.

IRCS Karnataka has recently been recognized nationally for its active role in health initiatives and awareness campaigns, having won awards twice.

Assembly Speaker UT Khader praised the DK unit for its 70 years of dedicated service, stating it has inspired humanitarian values in young people. He insisted that IRCS should continue motivating youth to donate blood, noting past misconceptions about blood donation. “The IRCS has helped people understand that donating blood is one of the greatest gifts,” he noted.

Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta also commended the IRCS DK unit and assured his support in securing funding through corporate social responsibility initiatives and government schemes to further its activities in the district. “While government efforts may not reach everyone directly, organizations like IRCS significantly impact the community,” he stated.

On this occasion, a digital souvenir titled ‘Samarpana’ was launched. The event was also attended by IRCS Karnataka vice-president Bhaskar Rao, IRCS Dakshina Kannada president Dr. Shantharam Shetty, and Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyasa Kamath.
