OpenAI Completes Acquisition of io Products Inc.
OpenAI has officially acquired io Products Inc., a hardware startup co-founded by the renowned former Apple designer, Jony Ive. This deal, valued at approximately $6.5 billion, is a major step for OpenAI to blend its ChatGPT AI technology with new hardware devices.
The announcement came in a blog post on Wednesday after OpenAI had to temporarily take down its original release due to a trademark dispute with Iyo, a hearing device company born out of Google’s research lab.
The updated announcement reads, “We’re excited to share that the io Products, Inc. team is now part of OpenAI. Jony Ive and his team at LoveFrom will stay independent but will play important design and creative roles within OpenAI.”
Initially, the acquisition was highlighted in a video featuring OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Jony Ive, but that video is still unavailable because of the ongoing legal matters.
OpenAI expressed that the integrated io team will collaborate with their research, engineering, and product teams in San Francisco. Together, they aim to develop AI-driven products that can “inspire, empower, and enable” users.
With this merger, OpenAI seeks to enhance how people engage with AI in everyday gadgets, drawing on Jony Ive’s legendary design expertise to guide this exciting new venture.
