New Aadhaar Enrollment Rules for Adults
In New Delhi, recent updates have made the process of obtaining an Aadhaar for adults significantly stricter. Originally designed as an identity proof, Aadhaar is now requiring more thorough checks to ensure that only verified citizens can enroll.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) plans to use online databases for verifying records related to passports, ration cards, and birth or school certificates. This is aimed at ensuring that the Aadhaar system remains secure.
Although the Aadhaar Act states that the ID is not proof of citizenship, the new measures are clearly aimed at preventing illegal immigrants from acquiring it. Over the past 15 years, more than 1.4 billion Aadhaar numbers have been issued, but there are concerns that some may have been assigned to deceased individuals. To address this and meet the needs of infants receiving Aadhaar at birth, the government is tightening the registration rules for adults.
To combat fraud, state authorities have been tasked with verifying applicants’ documents, making it harder for individuals to obtain an Aadhaar using fake information. Officials have indicated that it will now be extremely difficult for illegal immigrants to gain this crucial ID.
Additionally, UIDAI has developed new tools to enhance the verification process by checking documents such as driving licenses and utility bills, aligning with a broader effort for a consistent identity verification system.
These changes represent a significant shift towards a more controlled and reliable Aadhaar enrollment process, reflecting the government’s commitment to ensuring that the system serves its intended purpose.
