Tesla’s Stock Drops Following Musk’s Political Move
Tesla’s value took a significant hit on July 7, with a loss of over $80 billion after CEO Elon Musk announced the launch of a new political party named the “America Party.” Following this news, Tesla’s stock dropped nearly 7%, raising questions among investors about Musk’s distraction from his responsibilities at Tesla.
Dan Ives, an analyst from Wedbush Securities, emphasized the need for Tesla’s board to set clear guidelines for Musk. He stated, “The Tesla Board MUST act and create guidelines for Musk. The soap opera must end.”
Concerns Over Musk’s Focus on Politics
Ives further expressed that Tesla is entering a critical phase in its growth and cannot afford Musk’s focus to shift toward politics, which requires considerable time and resources. He warned that Musk’s political ambitions could lead to conflicts with key stakeholders, especially as the company faces regulatory challenges related to autonomous vehicles.
Proposal for Tesla’s Board
In his note, Ives suggested a three-point plan for the Tesla board:
- Tie Musk’s compensation to his commitment to Tesla.
- Form a committee to oversee Musk’s political activities.
- Consider granting additional Tesla shares based on his actual engagement with the company.
He stressed, “The Board can’t control Musk’s donations, but they can oversee whether his political activities interfere with his role as CEO.” He believes that Musk is crucial to Tesla’s future, particularly in autonomous technology.
Shareholder Reactions
James Fishback, CEO of Azoria and a significant Tesla investor, pulled his plans to launch a Tesla-focused exchange-traded fund following Musk’s announcement. He expressed concern that Musk’s political pursuits create a conflict with his primary responsibilities at Tesla.
In a message shared on social media, Fishback stated, “Elon is free to spend his own money on his political party, but he shouldn’t involve shareholders in that decision. He needs to focus on Tesla, not politics.”
As Tesla navigates this challenging period, stakeholders are closely watching how Musk’s dual roles will play out and its impact on the company’s future.
