Shubman Gill Shines Bright in Test Series, Draws Comparisons to Virat Kohli
Former England cricketer Jonathan Trott has praised Shubman Gill, likening him to the legendary Virat Kohli, who recently stepped away from Test cricket. The young Indian batter, just 25 years old, has been on fire in the current Test series against England, amassing an impressive 585 runs in just two matches, averaging 146.25.
In the opening Test held at Headingley, Gill scored a commanding 147 runs in his first innings. He followed this up with outstanding performances of 269 and 161 runs in the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Trott, who played 52 Tests between 2009 and 2015, remarked that Gill could not have wished for a better beginning to his leadership journey as the new captain of the Indian Test team.
During the second Test’s fifth day, Trott stated, “Today, he showed how complete a batter he is. He reminded me so much of the previous Indian number four – almost like a mirror image of that genius. Although they missed a victory at Headingley, he’s now in a great position to aim for a win here.”
Gill made headlines not only for his centuries but also for breaking several records, including achieving the most runs by an Indian in a Test match. Trott was particularly impressed by Gill’s natural ability to hit sixes with finesse, saying, “I feel truly privileged to witness such an innings. I can hardly recall him offering any chances to the English bowlers. His ability to change gears effortlessly, hitting sixes with pure cricket shots, was remarkable.”
With his fantastic run, Gill is on the verge of breaking even more records, standing just nine runs shy of becoming the Indian captain with the most runs in a Test series in England, potentially surpassing Kohli’s total of 593 runs from the 2018 tour.
