Indian Diaspora in Africa Embraces African Identity: Woman’s Viral Support for Zohran Mamdani

Support Grows for Zohran Mamdani’s African Identity

In the midst of a heated debate about New York mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani’s racial identity, a woman named Sophia Babai has publicly backed Mamdani, arguing that he is right to identify as African, even if his lineage doesn’t trace back to the continent. Babai expressed her views on BlueSky, stating, “We are from Africa!”

She explained that her family shares the same Indian diaspora roots as Mamdani’s father, Mahmood Mamdani, and that they always introduce themselves as African. Babai highlighted the unique culture of the Indian diaspora in East Africa, noting that they have their own distinct traditions, cuisine, and language that differ from those of Indians in India.

According to her, the Indian community in East Africa has a rich blend of Swahili influences, and their appearance may be different from those of Indians in other parts of the world. Babai pointed out that many individuals from this community identify primarily as African and may even prioritize their African identity over their Indian heritage.

“The idea that Zohran can’t identify as African because of his skin color is quite ironic,” she remarked, regarding the criticisms he faced. She went on to explain the historical connection of a group from Lahore, known as the Lohana, who migrated to Gujarat and Punjab, mentioning how this is part of the deeper roots of Mamdani’s family.

Babai noted that many Gujarati Africans she knows also identify more closely with their African heritage while recognizing their Indian roots. This perspective came after Mamdani attempted to categorize himself as African-American on a Columbia University application, which stirred a significant political uproar despite him clarifying that he was simply expressing his diverse background as someone born in Uganda.

As this discussion continues, it’s clear that the identity of individuals from the Indian diaspora in Africa is complex and multi-faceted, challenging traditional notions of race and belonging.
