Could Sanju Samson Join CSK? Aakash Chopra Suggests RR May Eye Jadeja or Ashwin in a Trade

Trade Talks Heat Up for Sanju Samson

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has highlighted recent reports indicating that Sanju Samson is generating interest from several Indian Premier League (IPL) teams, especially the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), as the 2026 season approaches.

Chopra, now a well-known cricket analyst, wonders how the Rajasthan Royals will react to potential trades, particularly if talks with CSK progress. He mentioned that Rajasthan might look to acquire a prominent player like Ravindra Jadeja in return.

Reports suggest that six players from the Rajasthan Royals have caught the attention of other franchises since the trading window opened on June 4, following the 2025 IPL final. This window will be open until a week before the 2026 auction and will reopen again after the auction, closing a month before the new season kicks off.

"Will this trade happen? CSK is interested, but discussions about specific players haven’t taken place yet. If a trade goes ahead, Rajasthan could ask for either Ashwin or Jadeja," Chopra stated during his YouTube show.

Samson has been a key player for the Royals since returning in 2018, and the team invested Rs 18 crore to retain him ahead of the mega auction last year. However, Rajasthan now has a strong lineup of batting options. Wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel has been making waves internationally, and young talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi shone during IPL 2025, often opening the batting alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal while Samson shifted to a middle-order role.

As Samson settles into an opener’s position with the Indian national team, speculation about a move to CSK opens up exciting opportunities.

Could Samson Be CSK’s Future?

Chopra suggested that Samson might be a natural choice to succeed MS Dhoni as a wicketkeeper-batter at CSK, a team looking for a long-term replacement for their legendary captain. After finishing at the bottom of the table in IPL 2025, CSK had brought in Urvil Patel, an uncapped wicketkeeper-batter from Gujarat. Although he showed promise alongside young talents Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis, concerns linger about whether he can truly take on Dhoni’s legacy.

"A CSK official mentioned they are very interested in Samson, seeing him as a valuable addition since he is a wicketkeeper-batter. They want to think ahead beyond MS Dhoni," Chopra explained.

"I had also considered Dhruv Jurel and even Rishabh Pant for this role. They need a wicketkeeper-batter with experience, not just Urvil Patel. If you want to carry forward Dhoni’s legacy, you need someone of that quality," he added.

Dhoni has not yet made a decision about participating in the 2026 season. The cricket legend, who will turn 45 next year, shared that he is not in a hurry to finalize his future plans after the 2025 season. Regardless, CSK must start preparing for a time without Dhoni.
