As Assam prepares for its upcoming assembly elections early next year, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is taking a strong stance in the campaign. Recently, his government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has initiated a bold and controversial effort to pinpoint and remove what they term “illegal Bangladeshis.” This initiative has brought back older laws, moving away from the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and adding layers of complexity involving security, identity, and religion to the political discussions in the state.
