Mohammed Shami Calls for Stronger Backing for Bumrah as India’s Bowlers Struggle in Leeds

Shami Critiques Indian Bowlers After Test Loss to England

India’s fast bowler Mohammed Shami has expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s performance during the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. England secured a five-wicket victory, chasing down a challenging target of 371 to take an early lead in the series.

Shami highlighted that the Indian bowlers struggled, giving away runs at over 4.5 runs per over across both innings. He pointed out that only Jasprit Bumrah was able to make a significant impact, taking five wickets in the first innings but failing to claim any in the second, as England played cautiously.

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, Shami emphasized the need for other bowlers to learn from Bumrah. He stressed the importance of teamwork, suggesting that the bowlers should discuss strategies with Bumrah to strengthen their performance. "If we support Bumrah, we have a better chance of winning. There’s definitely room for improvement in our bowling," Shami stated.

He also noted that wickets taken by Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna in the second innings were less impactful, as England was already in a commanding position. Shami mentioned that seizing opportunities with the new ball is critical, saying, "Taking wickets with the new ball can change the game. We need to reduce the runs we give away to be more competitive."

Currently, Shami is not part of the squad for this series due to fitness concerns. The selectors have called up Arshdeep Singh, who has experience playing county cricket in England, to potentially fill the gap. It remains uncertain if Arshdeep will make his debut in the next Test, especially with questions surrounding Bumrah’s availability.
