China Backs Iran’s Call for Ceasefire Amid Rising Tensions
In a recent conversation, China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, expressed support for Iran’s quest for a genuine ceasefire. This statement comes as Israel accuses Tehran of breaching a delicate truce.
Wang emphasized the importance of protecting Iran’s national sovereignty and security, stating that a true ceasefire is vital for the return of normalcy in the region. This message was conveyed during a phone call with Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, as reported by the Chinese foreign ministry.
Meanwhile, the Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, mentioned that Israel chose not to escalate its military actions against Iran after discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday.
The rising tensions stem from accusations that Iran fired two missiles, breaking the fragile agreement meant to ensure peace. In response, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned of a strong retaliation.
Adding to the complexity, Trump took to his social media platform, urging Israel not to escalate the situation while criticizing both Israel and Iran for their actions concerning the ceasefire.
Wang also made it clear that China condemned recent U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, labeling them a serious violation of international law and the principles set forth in the United Nations Charter.
