Sourav Ganguly Reveals Rohit Sharma’s Hesitation to Step into Test Captaincy Post-Kohli

Rohit Sharma’s Reluctance to Lead the Indian Test Team

In a recent revelation, Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of India and current President of the BCCI, shared that Rohit Sharma was initially hesitant to take over as the captain of the Indian Test team after Virat Kohli stepped down. Kohli ended his captaincy in January 2022 following the Test series in South Africa, marking the end of a remarkable run, where he became one of the most successful Test captains in history.

After Kohli’s departure, Rohit was appointed as the new Test captain for the home series against Sri Lanka, but convincing him was not an easy task. Ganguly explained that Rohit was concerned about the added pressures and demands of captaincy on top of his existing responsibilities.

“We all respected Virat’s decision to step back, and then Rohit emerged as a candidate since he was already leading the Mumbai Indians in the IPL. I always believed in Rohit’s leadership qualities. When I approached him about captaining the Test team, he was hesitant because he was worried about his workload,” Ganguly told PTI.

Ganguly further emphasized a critical conversation he had with Rohit, urging him to consider whether he wanted his career to end without having led India in Tests. This discussion seemed to resonate with Rohit, who took some time to think it over before ultimately accepting the role. Ganguly noted that Rohit is quite adaptable and open to discussions.

During his captaincy, Rohit led India in 24 Test matches, securing 12 victories, while nine resulted in losses and three matches ended in draws. Notably, he became only the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni to draw a Test series in South Africa. Recently, Rohit announced his retirement from Test cricket, with Shubman Gill stepping in as his successor.

This shift in leadership marks a new chapter for Indian cricket as they prepare for the ongoing tour of England.
