West Indies Shine in T20I Against Ireland, Despite Pooran’s Retirement
In a remarkable display of skill, the West Indies cricket team showcased their talent in a T20I match against Ireland on June 15, despite the recent retirement of star batter Nicholas Pooran. The team achieved an impressive total of 256 runs for the loss of 5 wickets at the Bready Cricket Ground, closely approaching their record high of 258 runs set against South Africa earlier this year.
Evin Lewis and Shai Hope were the standout performers, forming a dynamic opening partnership that yielded 122 runs in just over 10 overs. Hope’s dismissal by Barry McCarthy brought a slight slowdown to the innings, but the team quickly regained momentum, scoring a remarkable 60 runs in the last three overs. Keacy Carty, after a slow start, finished strong, while Romario Shepherd made a valuable contribution, scoring 19 runs off just 6 balls.
On the bowling side, Ireland struggled to contain the West Indies’ batting, with only Matthew Humphreys recording decent figures of 2 wickets for 16 runs. Debutant Liam McCarthy had a tough outing, conceding 81 runs in his four overs, marking one of the worst bowling performances in T20I history.
Evin Lewis was the star of the match, scoring 91 runs from just 44 balls. Although he missed out on a century, falling short by just 9 runs, his contribution laid the foundation for a strong team total.
This was the final match of the T20I series, which had seen the previous two games canceled due to bad weather.
Nicholas Pooran’s Retirement
In other news, Nicholas Pooran recently made waves in the cricket scene by announcing his retirement from international cricket at the age of 29. Taking to social media, Pooran described the decision as “very difficult.” Throughout his career, he amassed over 4,000 runs across 61 T20 Internationals and 106 One Day Internationals.
His surprising retirement came soon after he had asked to be rested from an upcoming white-ball series in England, following his commitments with the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL.
