Tragic Stampede at RCB Celebration Claims Lives

A joyful event turned tragic on Wednesday as a stampede broke out during the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) parade, celebrating the cricket team’s first IPL title in 18 years. Unfortunately, at least 11 fans lost their lives, and many others were injured near the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

This incident is part of a worrying trend in India, where over 50 people have died in various stampedes this year alone, occurring at temples, railway stations, and during major events like the Maha Kumbh.

Earlier this year, on February 15, a stampede at New Delhi Railway Station resulted in 18 fatalities and 15 injuries, primarily involving pilgrims traveling to the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. Just a couple of weeks earlier, a stampede at the Sangam area during a holy occasion led to the deaths of 30 people and injured 60 others as crowds gathered for a sacred dip.

The country has seen several similar tragedies in recent years:

  • May 3, 2025: A stampede during a festival at the Sri Lairai Devi temple in Goa resulted in six deaths and about 100 injuries.
  • January 8, 2025: At Tirumala Hills’ Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple, six devotees lost their lives while many suffered injuries in a ticket-related stampede.
  • December 4, 2024: A stampede during a movie screening in Hyderabad led to one fatality and injuries for a young boy.
  • July 2, 2024: Over 121 lives were lost at a prayer meeting in Uttar Pradesh when panic broke out.
  • March 31, 2023: A tragic building collapse during a ceremony in Indore led to 36 deaths.

Additional tragic incidents include:

  • January 1, 2022: 12 deaths at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu.
  • September 29, 2017: 23 fatalities on a bridge in Mumbai.
  • July 14, 2015: 27 deaths in a stampede at a bathing spot in Andhra Pradesh.
  • October 3, 2014: 32 people killed during Dussehra celebrations in Patna.
  • October 13, 2013: 115 casualties in a stampede during Navratri festivities in Madhya Pradesh.
  • November 19, 2012: Around 20 lives lost in a stampede during Chhath Puja in Patna.

The safety of large gatherings remains a pressing concern, as these events can unexpectedly turn into tragedies.
