Shubman Gill’s Costly Mistake: Robin Uthappa Breaks Down GT’s Eliminator Loss to MI

Uthappa Critiques Gill’s Captaincy in GT’s Elimination from IPL 2025

In a recent commentary, former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa pointed out a significant mistake made by Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill during their match against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2025 Eliminator. GT faced a 20-run defeat, resulting in their exit from the tournament.

Uthappa specifically criticized Gill for the decision to give the new ball to Prasidh Krishna, who has typically excelled in the middle overs. Krishna was introduced early in the second over, but he struggled, conceding 10 runs in his first over and then being hit for 26 runs in his second by Jonny Bairstow.

"It seemed like GT was reacting too late. Putting Prasidh in the powerplay was a poor choice given his past performance in the middle. His initial over was costly, and they didn’t adjust their strategy. The overs where he conceded 26 and 22 runs were particularly damaging. Plus, their fielding errors didn’t help. You can’t drop that many catches and expect to win," Uthappa remarked on JioStar.

Despite the tough outing, Prasidh managed to conclude the match with figures of 2 for 52 in four overs, taking the wickets of Rohit Sharma (81 off 50) and Naman Dhir (9 off 6). He wrapped up the tournament as one of the top wicket-takers, ending with 25 wickets in 15 matches.

Mumbai Indians set a challenging target, scoring 228 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. In response, Gujarat Titans could only reach 208 for 6. Sai Sudharsan stood out with a brilliant innings of 80 runs off 49 balls. Unfortunately, Gill fell for just 1 run, dismissed lbw by Trent Boult. Washington Sundar also contributed significantly with a quick 48 runs off 24 balls, forming an important 84-run partnership with Sudharsan.

The partnership was broken by Jasprit Bumrah, who took Sundar’s wicket with a perfectly timed yorker, reigniting MI’s chances in the match. With this victory, Mumbai Indians advanced to Qualifier 2, where they will compete against Punjab Kings on June 1 in Ahmedabad.
