Liverpool Signs Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen
Liverpool Football Club has officially signed Dutch full-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen. This announcement comes shortly after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid.
Frimpong, who is 24 years old, has had a fantastic run in Germany over the past four and a half years. During his time there, he played 190 matches, scoring 30 goals and providing 44 assists. The transfer is set to be finalized once the transfer window opens on June 1, with Liverpool agreeing to pay the fee in three yearly installments.
This signing also marks a significant change for Liverpool, as Alexander-Arnold’s departure signals the end of an era. The England star, who will be a free agent at the end of June, has moved to Madrid for around 10 million. He is expected to join his new team ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Frimpong is anticipated to take on a significant role at Liverpool. While he’s seen as a replacement for Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool’s new head coach, Arne Slot, believes he can also play various positions on the right side. Frimpong will primarily play as a right-back but can slot into more advanced positions, particularly when Mohamed Salah is away for the Africa Cup of Nations in January.
“I was really excited when Liverpool showed interest. It felt like a no-brainer for me,” Frimpong shared. “I told my agents, ‘Make this happen!’ I promise to give my all for the fans. Together, we can celebrate and achieve great things.”
Frimpong is familiar with English football, having spent nine years in Manchester City’s academy before moving to Celtic in 2019. His return to England as a home-grown player is beneficial under Premier League regulations.
He joins a growing group of Dutch players at Liverpool, including Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch alongside coach Slot.
Frimpong leaves Leverkusen after a standout season, where the team, under the guidance of Xabi Alonso, achieved a historic double, winning both the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal. The team went 51 games unbeaten before losing to Atalanta in the Europa League final.
Individually, Frimpong has been recognized as one of the best in the Bundesliga, being named to the Team of the Season for two consecutive years. He also made his debut for the Netherlands in October 2023, earning 12 international caps and scoring once.
