Climate Action Takes Center Stage at Goafest 2025
On the third day of Goafest 2025, the focus shifted significantly towards climate action during a session called ‘Sustainability Discussion: The Business Costs of a Warming World.’ This engaging panel, organized by Earthday.org, featured key speakers Karuna Singh, Regional Director for Asia, and Debapriya Dutt, Director of Projects for South and Southeast Asia. They discussed the urgent links between environmental harm and its economic consequences.
Karuna Singh kicked off the discussion by highlighting the vast support for environmental issues worldwide. She mentioned, “Every year, over a billion people unite to voice their concerns for the environment,” emphasizing the importance of Earth Day. The theme for this year, “Our Power, Our Planet,” not only raises awareness but also calls for meaningful changes, particularly from influential industries.
Singh also praised India’s advancements in renewable energy, acknowledging the nation’s shift towards greener options. However, she cautioned that climate change is not a future issue; it poses immediate financial risks for businesses. “The costs of a warming world are not just about the environment but also the economy,” she explained.
Debapriya Dutt then brought the conversation closer to home by sharing an example of climate action inspired by Goafest itself. She revealed, “For every delegate registered, we’re planting a tree.” With 3,098,000 saplings already in the ground, this initiative reflects a growing awareness that environmental responsibility should be woven into every part of business practice, from events to daily operations.
Dutt emphasized the critical importance of forests in maintaining ecological balance and managing climate challenges. She also inspired personal responsibility, sharing her own practice of gifting saplings. “It’s both meaningful and healing,” she said.
She concluded her talk with a powerful quote from Martin Luther: “Even if I knew that the world was going to end tomorrow, I would still plant my apple tree today.” This sentiment reminds us that hope and action are closely connected.
