R. Ashwin Supports Ravindra Jadeja for Captaincy in Upcoming Tests
Former Indian spinner R. Ashwin has shared his thoughts on the future of Indian cricket leadership, suggesting that all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, the team’s most experienced player, should be considered for the captaincy over the next two years.
As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) prepares to announce the squad for the Test tour of England by the end of May, conversations about the next captain are heating up. The recent retirements of key players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have left a significant gap in the team’s leadership.
Currently, Shubman Gill is being talked about as a leading candidate to take over from Rohit, while some former cricketers are advocating for Jasprit Bumrah. Ashwin acknowledged Bumrah’s strength as a potential captain but also mentioned Jadeja as a serious contender.
During a recent episode of his YouTube show "Ash ki Baat," Ashwin praised Gill for his impressive performances against England earlier this year. However, he emphasized that given Jadeja’s extensive experience—boasting 3,370 runs and 323 wickets from 80 Test matches—he should not be overlooked for the captaincy role.
"Ashwin stated, “Jadeja is the most experienced player in the team. He should definitely be in the conversation for captaincy. If we are open to training a young player for two years, we can do the same with Jadeja as well. He would also make a great vice-captain if that’s the direction they choose.”
He also highlighted that if Gill performs well in the IPL with the Gujarat Titans, it could enhance his chances for the captaincy. However, Ashwin noted that being a Test captain requires understanding the domestic cricket scene too.
"I hope the Gujarat Titans make it to the IPL playoffs. If Gill does well, it will help him transition smoothly into captaincy. But remember, captaincy in Tests isn’t just about one great season; it’s also about understanding first-class cricket," he added.
