Hansi Flick Expresses Frustration After Barcelona’s Heartbreaking Champions League Exit
FC Barcelona’s manager, Hansi Flick, couldn’t hide his frustration after the team’s dramatic exit from the Champions League semi-finals. The Catalan club faced Inter Milan in a thrilling second leg on May 6, ultimately losing 4-3 at the San Siro.
In a nail-biting match, Barcelona managed to rally back from a 2-0 deficit, reminiscent of their first leg performance. However, a late extra-time goal dashed their hopes. Several close calls during the match left Flick visibly upset during his post-game press conference.
Inter Milan halted Barcelona’s quest for their first Champions League final in ten years with a goal from substitute Davide Frattesi in extra time. Barcelona initially seemed on track for victory after pulling ahead 3-2 with Raphinha’s goal in the 87th minute, but were held back by a late equalizer from Francesco Acerbi, followed by the winning goal from Frattesi.
Though Flick didn’t specify the controversial moments, he showed clear irritation over two key decisions: one that awarded a penalty to Inter against Pau Cubarsi, and another that denied Barcelona a penalty despite a foul on Lamine Yamal inside the box.
Players and staff also voiced concerns over what they believed was a handball by Acerbi and a foul by Denzel Dumfries during the build-up to the equalizer that sent the match into extra time.
"I don’t want to dwell on the referee," Flick remarked, "but many of the 50-50 calls seemed to go their way." He continued, "I’m disappointed, but not with my team. They gave it their all. We’re out this time, but next year we’ll strive to make the fans proud."
Barcelona, who had ambitions for a treble after winning the Copa del Rey, will now shift their focus to La Liga. Currently at the top of the table, they’ll face their arch-rivals, Real Madrid, on Sunday, leading by four points with only four matches left in the season.
Flick emphasized his team’s potential, saying they would learn from this experience despite the disappointment. "It’s a journey," he noted. "We aim to keep improving. While we have little time to prepare now, we’ll be back in action soon."
He concluded, “Every player should be proud of their performance. We will analyze the game carefully and see how we can move forward.”
