Right to Self-Defense: A Response to Pahalgam Attack
Following the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the loss of 26 lives, former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton has expressed strong support for India’s right to defend itself against terrorism. In his interview with NDTV, Bolton emphasized that India must have the freedom to respond to threats that endanger its sovereignty and citizens.
Bolton highlighted that India possesses a legitimate right to self-defense, particularly in the face of terrorism. However, he urged the Indian government to explore all diplomatic avenues before considering military action. He believes India should aim to set a positive example by demonstrating efforts for peaceful resolutions to longstanding issues.
Reflecting on past incidents, Bolton pointed out Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s restraint during the 2019 Pulwama attack, which claimed the lives of 40 CRPF soldiers. That incident led to swift airstrikes on terrorist camps, showcasing India’s capacity for a decisive response.
Following the recent Pahalgam attack, which was claimed by The Resistance Front—a faction of Lashkar-e-Taiba—there’s speculation that a similar military response may be forthcoming. Reports suggest that Modi has empowered the armed forces with the discretion to choose targets.
Encouraging Diplomatic Efforts Over Military Action
Bolton also advocated for increased diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in Kashmir, recognizing it as a persistent issue straining relations between India and Pakistan, both of which are nuclear-armed nations. He stated that the U.S. can play a role in encouraging dialogue and proposing solutions to avoid future attacks.
He identified two main areas for diplomatic pressure on Pakistan: First, urging Pakistan to control its territory to prevent terrorist attacks; second, raising concern about Pakistan’s growing ties with China. Bolton suggested that India should highlight this influence in discussions with Pakistan, stressing the need for a resolution without external influence.
Moreover, he recommended India approach China to leverage its position and press Pakistan to rein in terrorist groups. If these diplomatic strategies do not yield results, Bolton indicated that India would then have grounds to respond militarily, having exhausted all peaceful options.
The Importance of Targeted Retaliation
Bolton emphasized that any military response from India should be precise and targeted, focusing specifically on the responsible groups. Such an approach would signal to Pakistan that India does not harbor broader ambitions and could provide a pathway for Pakistan to de-escalate and resume diplomatic discussions.
He concluded by stating that while disagreements among neighbors are normal, resorting to terrorism should never be an acceptable method of expressing such disagreements.
