Avinash Sable Finishes Eighth in Diamond League Steeplechase
India’s top steeplechaser, Avinash Sable, competed in the Diamond League Meeting on Saturday, finishing eighth with a time of 8 minutes and 23.85 seconds. This was his second race of the season, and while his time was over a second slower than his previous race in Xiamen on April 26, he improved his position, moving up five spots from his last outing.
In Xiamen, Sable placed 13th with a time of 8 minutes and 22.59 seconds, facing a talented group of athletes. The race on Saturday was won by Abrham Sime from Ethiopia, who clocked an impressive 8:07.82. Kenyans Edmund Serem and Simon Kiprop Koech secured second and third places with times of 8:08.68 and 8:09.05, respectively.
Another Ethiopian athlete, Samuel Firewu, who previously triumphed in Xiamen, finished sixth this time with a time of 8:11.18. He had made waves by defeating reigning Olympic and world champion Soufiane El Bakkali in Xiamen.
El Bakkali did not participate in this event. Sable returned to the track for only the second time since the Diamond League Final last September, where he placed ninth with a time of 8:17.09. His personal best stands at 8:09.91.
Sable, who finished 11th at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games with a time of 8:14.18, has already secured a spot for the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo this September based on his performance in Paris.
