Pahalgam Attack Update: Prime Minister Modi Returns Early, Finance Minister Cut Short US Trip

Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to New Delhi a day earlier than planned after concluding his official visit to Saudi Arabia. His decision came in the wake of a tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 people, most of whom were tourists enjoying the beautiful scenery.

Initially, Modi was scheduled to fly back on Wednesday night, but the attack prompted an immediate change of plans. The incident has led to widespread sorrow and anger across the nation.

Finance Minister Returns from the United States

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has also decided to truncate her trip abroad. She arrived in the United States on Sunday for a six-day visit, which was followed by plans to go to Peru. However, in light of the recent violence, she will be taking the earliest flight back home.

The Finance Ministry shared the news on social media, stating that Sitharaman is making her return to stand alongside fellow citizens during this challenging time. This shift in her plans signals the government’s determination to focus on the ongoing crisis at home, even as she had been engaging in important discussions with U.S. leaders.

Details of the Pahalgam Terror Attack

The deadly incident unfolded on Tuesday near Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination in southern Kashmir. Reports indicate that gunmen opened fire on a group of people near a well-known meadow. Tragically, among the 26 victims, many were holidaymakers drawn to this picturesque area.

Currently, investigations are ongoing, and no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. Security forces have heightened their presence, while intelligence agencies are actively working to identify the attackers. Efforts are being made to confirm the identities of the victims, and emergency services are on high alert.

Reaction to the Attack

The rapid returns of both Modi and Sitharaman exhibit the government’s serious approach to the unfortunate event. Their sudden change in plans from high-level diplomatic engagements underscores a shift in focus toward ensuring domestic security.

The attack has drawn strong condemnation from across the political spectrum, civil society organizations, and international observers. In Kashmir, security measures are being reinforced, and across India, government flags are at half-mast as a mark of respect.

As authorities continue to gather more information, the nation collectively mourns this heartbreaking loss, and further updates are expected in the coming days.
