In a surprising turn of events during the IPL 2025 match between Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals, former Indian captain Anil Kumble commented on Rishabh Pant’s unusual batting position. Pant, who is also the captain of Lucknow Super Giants, batted at No. 7, leaving many to speculate about the decision after he appeared visibly frustrated with the team’s management.
As the innings unfolded, fans and analysts were left puzzled when Pant, expected to bat much earlier, remained off the field while his teammates continued to bat. After Nicholas Pooran’s dismissal in the 12th over with the team in a strong position at 99 for 2, observers anticipated that Pant would come in. However, Abdul Samad took the crease instead, and the surprises continued as Mukesh Kumar quickly took two wickets for Delhi, putting pressure on Lucknow.
In an unexpected twist, Pant was finally brought in with just two balls remaining in the innings. He attempted a risky shot right away but missed, and on the final delivery, he attempted a reverse lap, only to deflect the ball onto his stumps. Angered by the situation, he stormed back to the dugout.
Kumble, discussing the situation on Star Sports, noted, “It’s understandable to come in under less pressure, but this was far too late. Rishabh’s frustration shows he felt wronged. Was it his choice not to bat higher? Was it Justin Langer’s decision or perhaps Zaheer Khan’s? He looked quite upset.”
Before taking to the field, Pant was seen in an intense discussion with team mentor Zaheer Khan. Former teammate Suresh Raina highlighted the importance of Pant’s role, saying, “There are still 20 overs left. You have to lead the team and help them win. He might have been telling Zaheer, ‘I should have batted earlier.’”
While Kumble expressed sympathy for Pant’s feelings, he also advised him to channel that frustration positively. “He needs to handle this situation better. As captain, he must maintain a positive outlook and use his feelings to enhance his performance,” he added.
Following the match, Pant tried to clarify the team’s strategy regarding his batting position. He explained, “The plan was to make the most of the situation. We sent Samad in to take advantage of the wicket. After that, Miller came in, but we struggled to score. We need to figure out the best combination moving forward.”
