IPL 2025: KKR’s Ajinkya Rahane Calls Out Narine and Gurbaz After Lackluster Defeat to Gujarat

Kolkata Knight Riders’ captain, Ajinkya Rahane, expressed his disappointment following a lackluster performance against the Gujarat Titans at their home ground on April 21. After the match, Rahane, who usually maintains a calm demeanor, openly criticized his opening batsmen for their contribution to the team’s struggles.

This season, KKR’s opening pair, led by Sunil Narine, has not been performing as well as they did in 2024. Without his usual partner, Phil Salt, Narine has had a challenging time, accumulating only 147 runs in seven matches.

In his post-match interview, Rahane did not hold back, highlighting the need for better accountability from the team’s top order. He remarked, “I felt that 199 runs was a target we could chase. We bowled well and got back into the game. We really need to improve our opening performances, which have been a constant issue for us this tournament. We need to learn from this quickly.”

He further explained that while the pitch slowed down during their innings, they expected to perform better, particularly in the middle overs. He noted, “Our bowlers have been getting better with each match, so we need to step up with the bat.”

Rahane himself showed determination, scoring a quick fifty off 36 balls despite the team’s overall struggles. Venkatesh Iyer, however, faced criticism for his 19-ball score of just 14 runs, lacking aggression during a crucial period of the chase.

Taking a subtle jab at Iyer, Rahane emphasized that a positive mindset is crucial in T20 cricket. “This format requires courage. One should not dwell on past failures but learn and aim to score,” he advised. “If you’re worried about getting out, that’s when you’ll struggle. Instead, focus on making runs and hitting boundaries.”

Iyer’s performance did not go unnoticed by fans, who took to social media to voice their frustrations.

Rahane also showed support for young talent Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who has been proving his worth in the middle order. “We have talented batsmen in the lineup, particularly in the middle overs. It’s important for them to be bold. Angkrish batted well today, and we’re looking to push our other players to step up,” he said in closing.

Despite the defeat, KKR remains in 7th place on the league table, with three wins from eight matches played. The Gujarat Titans, on the other hand, consolidated their standing with 12 points from the same number of games.

Stay tuned for updates on IPL 2025, including match schedules, team rosters, live scores, and the latest points tables.
