Jaat Director Gopichand Malineni Addresses Church Scene Backlash: “No Filmmaker Aims to Offend Any Community”

After facing criticism for a church scene in the film Jaat, director Gopichand Malineni has addressed the issue, insisting that there was no intention to offend anyone’s religious beliefs. This announcement follows the decision by the film’s production team to remove the controversial scene.

In an interview, Malineni explained that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) did not raise any concerns regarding the scene during the trailer review. However, they later requested the team to modify the film by blurring the background of the scene. “The censor board didn’t point out anything during the trailer’s review, but later they asked us to blur the background in the final version. We acted on this even before the issue was raised publicly,” he shared. He underlined that filmmakers aim to reach a wide audience and do not wish to hurt any community, emphasizing their goal of providing entertainment.

The production team previously issued a public apology acknowledging the backlash and confirmed the immediate removal of the scene. They expressed regret, stating, “We did not mean to hurt any religious sentiments. We sincerely apologize to everyone who was offended.”

Jaat, which features notable actors like Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, Saiyami Kher, and Regina Cassandra, was released in theaters on April 10, 2025. Set in a rural environment, the film deals with themes of identity, justice, and societal conflict. Hooda’s character struggles through a narrative filled with politics, violence, and a quest for redemption, supported by a strong ensemble cast that deepens the storyline.

The film continues to attract attention, not just for its plot and performances but also for sparking discussions about creative expression and the responsibilities that come with filmmaking.
