West Bengal: Embracing the Flames of Change

Tensions surrounding the newly enacted Waqf Amendment Act have sparked significant unrest in West Bengal, particularly in areas with large Muslim populations, such as Murshidabad and Malda, as well as in Bhangor, located in South 24 Parganas. What began as peaceful demonstrations turned violent on April 11-12, highlighting the deep communal divisions present in the state. The unrest resulted in three fatalities, over 200 arrests, and the deployment of paramilitary forces to manage the situation.

This turmoil serves as a stark reminder of the changing political dynamics in Bengal, where the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the main opposition, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), are both trying to secure the Hindu vote. This competition is contributing to growing discontent among the substantial Muslim community in the state, especially as the 2026 assembly elections approach.
