Pune to Host India’s First International Agriculture Hackathon

Pune is set to be the venue for India’s very first international agriculture hackathon, a significant move aimed at boosting innovation and tech-driven changes in the farming sector. This event, organized by the Maharashtra Government, aims to engage fresh ideas and innovative solutions for challenges faced by farmers.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who led a meeting about the upcoming hackathon, emphasized the importance of agriculture in India’s economy. He noted that integrating technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) could greatly empower farmers in Maharashtra and beyond.

Pawar stated that the hackathon will open up valuable opportunities for researchers and innovators, offering a pathway to enhance the state’s agricultural landscape. He remarked, “This event will not only increase farmers’ productivity but also address various issues within the farming sector, inspiring innovation and development.”

Scheduled for June 1 to 3, the hackathon is being supported by the Maharashtra State Department of Agriculture and prominent educational institutions like Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth and the College of Agriculture Pune. The initiative boasts backing from international partners including NatureGrowth from Israel and the Agriculture Department of the Embassy of the Netherlands. Additionally, national organizations such as the Bombay Chamber of Commerce, Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, and NABARD are among the key supporters.

Pune district collector Jitendra Dudi expressed that this hackathon represents a significant step toward merging technology with agriculture. He highlighted the goal of empowering young thinkers to devise scalable solutions that would not only support farmers but also enhance productivity and ensure food security.

This hackathon aims to be a major gathering of innovators, thinkers, policy makers, and industry leaders dedicated to agriculture. It will serve as a lively platform for collaborative efforts, generating innovative and practical solutions for urgent issues in Indian agriculture, such as climate adaptation, sustainable farming practices, and enhancing supply chains.
