Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced a tough defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match on April 11, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. KKR won by eight wickets, leaving CSK in ninth place on the points table with a low net run rate of -1.554. This victory propelled KKR to the third spot.

Batting first, CSK struggled to make an impact, scoring only 103 runs for the loss of nine wickets. Shivam Dube was the standout player for CSK, contributing 31 runs off 29 balls, including three fours. Vijay Shankar received two chances after dropped catches but managed to score only 29 runs off 21 balls. Both Devon Conway and Rahul Tripathi reached double digits but couldn’t make significant contributions.

In reply, KKR chased down the target with ease, completing it in just 10.1 overs. The 46-run partnership between Quinton de Kock and Sunil Narine in only 4.1 overs set the stage for KKR’s victory. Narine was particularly impressive, hitting 44 runs off just 18 balls before being dismissed by Noor Ahmad.

In a dramatic finish, Rinku Singh ended the match by hitting Ravindra Jadeja for a six. This match marked the return of MS Dhoni as captain of CSK after 683 days, but it quickly turned into a disappointing outing.

Notable Records Following CSK’s Loss to KKR

  • 76 Runs: CSK suffered their biggest defeat (by balls remaining) in IPL history. Their previous record was a 10-wicket loss to Mumbai Indians in 2020, where they were beaten with 46 balls left.

  • 76 Runs: This defeat also ranks as the 10th largest loss in IPL history based on balls remaining. The biggest remains an 87-ball victory for MI over KKR in 2008.

  • 76 Runs: This match represents the largest defeat CSK has faced at their home ground, Chepauk, where previously, Sunrisers Hyderabad lost to KKR by eight wickets with 57 balls remaining last season.

  • 3 Losses in a Row: It is the first time CSK has lost three consecutive matches at their home ground.

  • 5 Consecutive Defeats: CSK has now lost five matches in a row for the first time in IPL history.

  • 103 Runs: CSK recorded their lowest total in IPL history. Their previous lowest was 109 runs against MI in 2019.

  • 10.1 Overs: This match is also noted for being the second-fastest chase of over 100 runs against CSK, with the fastest being a 112-run chase by RCB in 9.4 overs in 2015.

Overall, it was a challenging match for CSK, and they will be looking to bounce back soon in the ongoing IPL season.
