During a press conference ahead of the Gujarat Titans’ upcoming match against the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Washington Sundar showed visible irritation in response to a journalist’s inquiry. The question revolved around Sundar’s limited playing time in the previous IPL season, where he participated in only two matches before being released by his former team.
In last year’s mega auction held in Jeddah, the Titans acquired Sundar for Rs 3.20 crore. However, he had to sit out the first three games of IPL 2025. The journalist pointed out that a commentator had mentioned on air that Sundar hadn’t received enough opportunities to showcase his talent.
“When did I say that?” Sundar initially questioned, expressing his annoyance. The journalist clarified that it was not Sundar who made the comment, but rather a commentator.
After addressing the confusion, Sundar shifted the focus back to his current role with the Titans, expressing gratitude for the chance to play under coach Ashish Nehra. “It’s a great opportunity for me. I’ve been preparing hard and practicing for long hours. Our coach emphasizes improvement in all aspects of the game, which has benefitted me greatly. I’m confident that when my time comes, I will be ready,” Sundar stated.
He recently had a significant impact on the team, contributing to a seven-wicket victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 6. Batting at number four, he scored 49 runs off 29 balls, forming a 90-run partnership with captain Shubman Gill. Thanks to his performance, the Titans successfully chased down a target of 153 runs with 20 balls to spare.
