Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik believes the Indian Premier League (IPL) has played a vital role in shaping the future of Indian cricket. The IPL is gearing up for its 18th season, set to kick off on March 22, with the defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders facing off against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the opening match.
Since its launch in 2008, the IPL has seen tremendous growth and has been instrumental in nurturing many top cricketers for the nation. Recently, Karthik highlighted the tournament’s significant impact on the sport, particularly in fostering a winning mindset among players. He noted that the IPL has also contributed to improving cricketing facilities across the country, which has benefited many young talents.
Karthik remarked, “The IPL has instilled a winning mentality in our players. With the financial boost that many teams receive, a significant amount has been reinvested into infrastructure. As the infrastructure improves, so does the quality of the sport.”
He further emphasized how the IPL has positioned India uniquely on the global cricketing stage, making it possible for the country to field two or three international teams simultaneously. “Thanks to the IPL, we can now competently compete with multiple teams in international cricket. India finds itself in a fortunate position with such a diverse pool of cricketers,” he added.
After retiring from all formats of Indian cricket post-IPL 2024, Karthik has taken on a new role as batting coach and mentor for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the upcoming season. The team will be under new leadership with captain Rajat Patidar, as they aim to secure their long-awaited title victory.
