Rescue Operations Underway for Construction Workers Trapped in Uttarakhand Avalanche
Rescuers are working hard to save 42 construction workers caught under snow after a sudden avalanche in Uttarakhand, India. The avalanche occurred near the border with Tibet, hitting a camp by the mountain village of Mana on Friday.
Originally, 57 workers were on site clearing snow when the avalanche struck. Fortunately, 15 have been rescued, but a group of 42 remains missing, according to Ridhim Agarwal, an official from the state’s disaster relief team.
Disaster response units are attempting to reach the trapped workers at the high-altitude camp. The area had been under an avalanche warning since Thursday evening, as reported by local media. However, the ongoing heavy snowfall and strong winds are complicating rescue efforts, as stated by Deepam Seth, the top police officer in the region.
“It has been snowing heavily with strong winds. The roads are completely blocked. We have sent snowplows to clear the way,” he told NDTV.
The Indian Army’s Central Command has also announced that they are deploying additional resources and personnel to assist in the rescue operations.
In similar news, the Indian Army’s IBEX brigade has jumped into action, despite the tough weather conditions and minor avalanches occurring in the area. They are determined to carry out rescue operations at the site.
Avalanches and landslides are frequent in the higher areas of the Himalayas. Experts say climate change is intensifying weather patterns, with rising ocean temperatures contributing to these severe events. The rapid development in the delicate Himalayan region has raised concerns about environmental impacts linked to deforestation and construction activities.
Tragic events in the past highlight these issues; nearly 100 people lost their lives in Uttarakhand in 2021 when a glacier fell into a river, causing flash floods. Additionally, monsoon floods and landslides in 2013 claimed around 6,000 lives, prompting demands for a review of development projects in the area.
As this avalanche incident unfolds, rescue efforts continue alongside operations in southern India, where workers are also trapped in a collapsed tunnel, marking a challenging time for all involved.
