Neeraj Chopra Celebrates India-Pakistan Javelin Rivalry Boosting the Sport

Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is excited about how the intense rivalry between India and Pakistan is elevating the sport of javelin to new heights. In a recent interview, he expressed his belief that broadcasting javelin competitions in both nations could significantly benefit the sport, especially with his rivalry against Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem.

At the recent Paris Olympics in 2024, Neeraj and Arshad secured first and second place, respectively. This marked a historic occasion where no European athlete made it into the top three of the men’s javelin event. Neeraj praised Arshad for his exceptional performance during the competition, highlighting the friendly competition that exists between them.

Neeraj mentioned that many in the javelin community were surprised by the long distance Arshad threw in Paris. He explained that such remarkable throws can happen in an athlete’s career due to various factors. “Arshad’s throw was phenomenal, catching everyone off guard. It was his best day, and his technique was flawless. He had prepared well after training in South Africa,” he said. The Indian athlete emphasized that Arshad’s season began just a month before the Olympics, which often leads to improved performances.

He believes that the rivalry between India and Pakistan adds a thrilling dimension to the sport. “The interest in this competition could skyrocket if it is aired live. With the large populations of both countries, viewership will naturally be high, benefiting the sport and enriching the Asian sports culture,” Neeraj added.

Neeraj also noted that the 2024 Paris Olympics was remarkable in that it was the first time no European athletes won medals in the men’s javelin event. He pointed out that javelin, previously dominated by European competitors, is now becoming a true global sport, which is exciting for its future.

Looking ahead, Neeraj and Arshad are set to face off again at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September 2025, and fans eagerly anticipate this high-profile matchup.
