KABUL: A team from the Taliban government is on its way to Japan for their first official visit to the country, marking a significant diplomatic trip outside of their usual region.
The Afghan delegation departed from Kabul on Saturday and is expected to stay in Japan for one week. The team includes representatives from several key ministries, including higher education, foreign affairs, and the economy.
Latif Nazari, the deputy minister of economy, expressed the delegation’s aims on Twitter, stating, “We seek dignified interaction with the world for a strong, united, advanced, prosperous, developed Afghanistan, and to be an active member of the international community.”
While the Taliban government often engages with neighboring nations and regional powers like those in Central Asia, Russia, and China, their official interactions with Europe have been limited to diplomatic summits in Norway in 2022 and 2023.
Following the Taliban’s takeover in 2021, Japan’s embassy in Kabul was relocated to Qatar, highlighting the shifting diplomatic landscape in Afghanistan.
