Skyscrapers: The Story of Tall Buildings That Remain Empty or Unfinished
When we think of a city, its skyline often comes to mind, especially those tall and impressive skyscrapers. However, not all of these towering structures live up to their potential. Some have been left abandoned, while others sit incomplete, catching the eye for all the wrong reasons.
These empty buildings can tell stories of economic struggles and challenges within a community. Cities face tough decisions about what to do with these structures. Some are simply left to decay, others are torn down, and a select few are brought back to life through revitalization efforts.
Historically, in the mid-1900s, many older buildings in the United States were demolished in large numbers. However, Shawn Ursini, a senior manager at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), highlights that this approach is not sustainable. He believes that many of these old buildings still have potential if we can find new creative uses for them.
Ursini noted that the CTBUH does not track abandoned buildings since they focus on completed structures. However, they do monitor buildings that have been put on hold. Often, when a project is stalled, there are still attempts to finish it, although many of these efforts may not succeed.
Presently, there are numerous notable skyscrapers around the world that are either empty or incomplete. These towering structures are a reminder of the challenges that cities face in managing their urban landscapes and the potential for renewal that still exists.
