Delhi Celebrates 25 Years of Cricket Governance
On Wednesday, a modest ceremony took place at the Roshanara Club in Delhi, where Dr. Radhakrishnan unveiled a plaque to honor the silver jubilee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). At this occasion, he encouraged players to embrace the essence of the game, emphasizing the importance of accepting defeats gracefully.
The gathering included various Board representatives, with the Roshanara Club holding special significance as the birthplace of the BCCI 25 years ago. The new plaque featured the names of key officials and affiliated clubs.
Dr. Radhakrishnan highlighted the deep connection cricket has developed with Indian culture, likening it to other symbols of British heritage, such as democratic voting and corporations. He praised the widespread enthusiasm for cricket across the nation, visible from the numerous clubs and activities dedicated to the sport.
He noted that Indian cricketers have made their mark on the global stage, citing legends like Ranjitsinhji and the Nawab of Pataudi as inspirations for future players.
“The game teaches valuable lessons,” Dr. Radhakrishnan said, stressing the need for players to exhibit a noble spirit and sportsmanship. He indicated that the scoreboard should matter less than the principles carried within the game itself, highlighting cricket’s role in fostering unity.
Reflecting on the progress made over the last 25 years, he urged the BCCI to continue its efforts in promoting the true spirit of sportsmanship.
Mr. J. C. Mukherjea, the BCCI president, welcomed attendees and shared the Board’s history, noting it was established in the same venue in 1928. He expressed the hope that the government would take a more supportive role beyond merely collecting taxes.
Ben Barnett, captain of the Commonwealth team, extended his congratulations to the BCCI for reaching this milestone. He spoke about the importance of goodwill among visiting teams and appreciated the warm hospitality he and his teammates received during their tour. Barnett acknowledged the excitement cricket generates, especially among young players, and wished for the continued advancement of the game in India.
He congratulated the Indian cricket team for its recent successes, emphasizing teamwork as the key to their achievements.
Mr. A. N. Ghose, the honorary secretary, announced that proceeds from a charity match held in Calcutta amounted to ₹25,000, which would be donated to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
The ceremony began with the hoisting of the national flag alongside the Board’s flag, marking a memorable occasion in Indian cricket history.
