Rohit Sharma’s Form Boosts India’s Champions Trophy Hopes, Says Azharuddin
Former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin believes that if Rohit Sharma maintains his impressive performance, India stands a strong chance of winning the Champions Trophy. Rohit made a remarkable comeback during the second ODI against England in Cuttack, where he scored his 32nd century. Prior to this match, he had struggled in the last 16 innings, amassing just 166 runs.
Rohit achieved his century in just 76 balls, striking 12 fours and 7 sixes, helping India secure a victory by four wickets. Azharuddin expressed his support for Rohit as he prepares for the Champions Trophy, noting that the timing of his regained form is crucial.
"I wish him all the best for the Champions Trophy. If Rohit Sharma performs well, there’s no doubt we can win it. His form has returned at an ideal time," Azharuddin said in an interview with PTI.
Rohit also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most runs scored as an opener for India across all formats. Azharuddin praised Rohit for his resilience, mentioning that despite having a tough time scoring runs recently, he did not lose heart and continued to push forward.
"He is a class player. Although he faced challenges, he showed great determination. I congratulate him on breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record and wish him all the best for the Champions Trophy," Azharuddin remarked.
Retirement is Rohit’s Decision
There has been speculation regarding Rohit’s future in the team, with some fans suggesting he should consider retirement. Azharuddin emphasized that this is a decision only Rohit can make, as he understands the demands of the game.
"It’s up to Rohit to decide. A player who is out there knows how intense the game can be," he stated.
India’s final ODI against England is set for February 12 in Ahmedabad, which will serve as Rohit’s last opportunity to shine before the Champions Trophy begins in Dubai, where India will face Bangladesh in their opening match.
