A Florida man is highlighting the risks associated with extreme diets after experiencing serious health issues. The man, who is in his mid-40s, was hospitalized in Tampa due to alarming symptoms he developed while following a strict carnivore diet for eight months. This diet consisted mainly of butter, cheese, and hamburger patties, with him consuming up to nine pounds of these high-fat, high-cholesterol foods daily.
Despite some initial benefits like weight loss and increased energy, his health deteriorated. He began to notice yellowish nodules forming on his palms, elbows, and feet, which were leaking a strange substance. Medical examinations revealed that his cholesterol levels had skyrocketed to over 1,000 mg/dL—far above the typical healthy range of under 200 mg/dL. Before starting the diet, his cholesterol had been between 210 and 300 mg/dL.
Doctors diagnosed him with xanthelasma, a condition where high cholesterol leads to the development of fat deposits on the skin. This case serves as a warning about the importance of managing cholesterol levels to avoid serious health complications.
Health experts have expressed concern about the increasing popularity of high-fat diets, despite the risks. Some influencers continue to promote these eating styles, with one former vegan recently gaining traction on social media by sharing her own high-fat diet plan, which includes butter, ground beef, and almost two dozen eggs daily.
In response to these trends, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has strongly advised against such extreme diets. They recommend maintaining a well-balanced diet that includes a variety of food groups, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, low-fat dairy, and diverse sources of protein. The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggest limiting meat consumption to about 5.5 ounces per day while emphasizing the importance of including vegetables, fruits, and grains in everyday meals.
