India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, recently participated in the inaugural Quad ministerial meeting under the new Trump administration. The meeting took place at the State Department in Washington, D.C., bringing together officials from Australia, Japan, and the United States. This gathering highlighted the commitment of the Quad countries to foster peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Participants and Key Discussions

The Quad ministerial was attended by Jaishankar, along with Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong, Japan’s Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi, and the newly appointed U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. This meeting marked Rubio’s first engagement in a multilateral context since taking office, signifying the strategic importance of the Quad for the United States.

During the discussions, the leaders emphasized their dedication to working together to ensure a free, open, stable, and prosperous Indo-Pacific. Jaishankar noted the significance of the timing of the meeting, which occurred just hours after the inauguration of the administration, underscoring its importance to the foreign policies of all member nations.

Public Statements and Reactions

Jaishankar shared his thoughts on the meeting via social media platform X, expressing gratitude to Rubio for hosting the event and highlighting the participation of his counterparts. He remarked, “It’s significant that the Quad meeting took place within hours of the Trump administration’s inauguration. This illustrates the priority it has in the foreign policy of its member states.”

Rubio, in an interview with NBC News, stated that the objective of the meeting was to reinforce the importance of collaborating with allies on key issues that matter to America and its citizens. A summary of their discussions is expected to be published soon.

Bilateral Meetings with U.S. Officials

After the Quad meeting, Jaishankar held a bilateral discussion with Secretary of State Marco Rubio that lasted over an hour. These discussions revolved around the extensive partnership between India and the U.S. and touched on various regional and global topics. India’s Ambassador to the U.S., Vinay Kwatra, also attended the meeting. Jaishankar described the session as "delightful" and reaffirmed India’s commitment to working closely with the U.S. on strategic matters.

Engagement with U.S. National Security Advisor

In addition to meeting with Rubio, Jaishankar also spoke with U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz at the White House. Their conversation focused on ways to strengthen the partnership between India and the U.S. to promote mutual benefits, global stability, and prosperity.

Jaishankar later tweeted, “Great to meet NSA @michaelgwaltz again this afternoon. We discussed strengthening our friendship to ensure mutual benefits and enhance global stability and prosperity. Looking forward to working together with an active and outcome-oriented agenda.”

Jaishankar’s visit to Washington, which included the Quad ministerial and key bilateral meetings, reaffirmed India’s dedication to building strategic partnerships and addressing regional challenges. The commitment of the Quad nations to deepen collaboration and respond to emerging global challenges emphasizes the importance of their joint efforts in the Indo-Pacific region.
