Gael Monfils Upsets Taylor Fritz at Australian Open

In an impressive display of skill and determination, veteran tennis player Gael Monfils knocked out Taylor Fritz in the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday, January 18. After losing the first set, Monfils battled back to secure the victory with a final score of 3-6, 7-5, 7-6, 6-4 at the Margaret Court Arena. This win made history as Monfils, at 38 years old, became the oldest player to defeat a top-5 seeded player in the tournament since the ATP rankings were introduced.

Monfils had a challenging start to the tournament, having to fight through a five-set match against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard before comfortably winning against Daniel Altmaier in the following round. Coming into the match against Fritz, he was seen as the underdog, and the first set reflected that. Both players were strong on their serve, but Fritz took control with a crucial break late in the set, allowing him to win it.

Monfils’ Resilience Shines Through

As the match progressed, Monfils showcased his impressive serving skills, recording 24 aces throughout the match. In the second set, he managed to break Fritz’s serve, much to the frustration of his opponent.

The third set saw another highly competitive showdown, with both players maintaining strong service games. The set went to a tiebreaker, where Monfils dominated, quickly racing to a 6-0 lead. Although Fritz managed to score once, Monfils took the set and gained a critical edge in the match.

In the fourth set, Fritz fought back hard, pushing Monfils to his limits. A pivotal moment came in the ninth game when Monfils broke Fritz’s serve, setting him up for victory. He served out the final game with confidence, securing his spot in the fourth round.

Next up for Monfils is a match against either Ben Shelton or Lorenzo Musetti. Tennis fans are eager to see how the 38-year-old will continue to perform in this year’s tournament.
