On January 9, 2025, the French carrier strike group, led by the aircraft carrier FNS Charles de Gaulle, began its journey in the Indian Ocean after brief stops in Goa and Kochi. This marks a new phase of their Mission Clemenceau 25, which will take them towards the Indonesian region to engage in a military exercise known as “La Perouse.”
Shortly after setting sail, the strike group participated in joint operations with the Indian Navy. The French destroyer teamed up with the Indian frigate INS Mormugao for a navigation exercise, where both ships practiced tactical maneuvers together. Additionally, the crews showcased their skills by conducting helicopter operations.
Following the initial drills, the fleet replenishment tanker FNS Jacques Chevallier refueled the INS Mormugao while Indian Sukhoi and Jaguar fighter jets operated alongside French Rafale aircraft in a joint air defense exercise.
The next day, an Atlantique 2 maritime patrol aircraft made a stopover in India before continuing to Indonesia, further demonstrating the strong ties between France and India. This stop allowed the strike group to operate effectively far from its home base.
These activities showcased the teamwork and coordination between the two navies. They precede the upcoming 42nd edition of the VARUNA exercise, which has been held annually since 1983, highlighting the enduring partnership between France and India in naval operations.
For nearly three decades, the two nations have worked together through various exercises, whether on land, in the air, or at sea. The French Embassy noted that India has provided significant support, including numerous port visits for French naval vessels, strengthening the strategic relationship between the two countries.
