India Faces Tough Challenge in Test Series Against Australia
India finds themselves in a challenging position in the ongoing five-match Test series against Australia, with their hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final hanging by a thread. The Gabba match in Brisbane was disrupted by rain; despite Head’s strong performance, Australia couldn’t extend their lead. However, they did take a 2-1 advantage after winning the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground by 184 runs. Now, India must rally together to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Challenging History at the SCG
Historically, India has struggled at the SCG, which added to the urgency of securing a victory in Melbourne, a venue more familiar to them. Out of 13 Tests played at the Sydney Cricket Ground, India has only claimed one win, suffering five losses and drawing seven. Their sole victory dates back to January 1978, when a team led by Bishan Singh Bedi defeated Australia by an innings and two runs.
In that memorable match, India bowled Australia out for just 131 runs in their first innings. Solid contributions from Gundappa Viswanath and Karsan Ghavri allowed India to take a substantial lead of 265 runs. In the second innings, Australia was dismissed for 263 runs, with Erapalli Prasanna taking four wickets and Bedi contributing three in the first innings.
Rohit Sharma’s team is now under significant pressure. Having participated in the finals of the 2018-19 and 2020-21 World Test Championships, they are determined to reach a third consecutive final. However, their path is uncertain, especially after experiencing losses in five out of seven Tests so far.
