Sunil Gavaskar Praises Young Cricketer Nitish Kumar Reddy’s Talent
Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar has praised the young talent Nitish Kumar Reddy, highlighting him as one of the most promising stars in Indian cricket today. Gavaskar recognized that Nitish’s batting technique shows more sophistication compared to Hardik Pandya when he first started his international career.
At just 21, Nitish is making a name for himself in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, emerging as a reliable player in tense situations. His standout moment came during the recent Melbourne Test, where he scored his first Test century, even though India lost by 184 runs.
While batting at No. 8, Nitish made an impressive 114 runs in the first innings, playing a crucial role in closing the gap for India. The occasion was even more special as his father was present at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to witness his achievement.
Gavaskar shared his thoughts in a column, stating, "The Melbourne Test showcased one of the brightest young stars in Indian cricket, Nitish Kumar Reddy. He first caught the attention of cricket fans with his performances for the Hyderabad franchise in the IPL. While he hadn’t achieved much at the first-class level, it’s commendable that selectors like Ajit Agarkar recognized his potential and brought him into Test cricket."
Nitish had already shown his potential with solid performances of 40 runs in Perth and Adelaide, but it was his remarkable century in Melbourne against renowned bowlers like Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc that truly elevated his profile on the world stage. Although his batting skills are developing well, Gavaskar noted that improving his bowling could help him become an effective all-rounder for the Indian team.
"In his debut Test in Perth, it was clear that he could understand game situations and adapt his play. With each test, that impression of him being a smart cricketer only grew stronger," Gavaskar remarked.
Over the four Tests in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Nitish has scored 294 runs and taken three wickets, showcasing his potential as a rising star in the sport.
Gavaskar concluded his remarks by saying, "In Melbourne, when India was in a tough spot, he emerged with an outstanding century, securing his position in the team for the long run. Since Hardik Pandya’s absence from Test cricket, India has been searching for a medium-pace all-rounder, and while Reddy’s bowling is still developing, he is already a more accomplished batsman than Pandya was at the same stage in his career."
