Rain Disrupts Day 4 of Test Match Between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan

Day 4 of the first Test match between Zimbabwe and Afghanistan in Bulawayo was largely affected by rain, allowing only 31 overs of play to take place. As the day ended with rain showers, Afghanistan found themselves trailing by 71 runs, with their score at 515 for 3, chasing Zimbabwe’s impressive first-innings total of 586.

The day’s play resumed with Afghanistan at 515 for 2, thanks to a remarkable partnership of 364 runs between Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi. This partnership is now recorded as the eighth-highest for the third wicket in men’s Test history. The impressive collaboration was finally broken in the morning when debutant seam bowler Newman Nyamhuri secured his first Test wicket by getting Rahmat Shah out for 234 runs. Rahmat edged a drive to the gully in just the second over of the day, adding only three runs to his overnight score.

A Rainy Day 4

Hashmatullah Shahidi, who was unbeaten on 179 runs, continued to anchor the innings with Afsar Zazai, who was on 46 and looking for his first Test half-century. Together, the duo built an unbroken partnership of 87 runs for the fourth wicket, with Shahidi playing steadily while Zazai showcased an aggressive batting style.

Zimbabwe’s bowlers, especially Nyamhuri and Blessing Muzarabani, found some help from the pitch in the morning session, with seam movement and occasional bounce. However, Shahidi and Zazai remained calm, capitalizing on loose deliveries whenever they appeared. Among Zazai’s highlights were a six he pulled off Sean Williams and some elegant shots through the off-side.

By the end of the first session, Afghanistan had added 73 runs. However, after lunch, adverse weather conditions cut short the play. Shahidi struck a boundary right after the break, but just two overs later, lightning and thunder led to the players leaving the field. Heavy rain soon followed, and despite the efforts of the ground staff, no more play was possible for the day.

With rain prevailing and only one day left in the match, it appears to be heading towards a draw. Both teams will hope for clearer skies on the final day to seize any opportunity for play.
